The months between the end of one harvest and the start of the next are the hardest of the year for households without a reserve. Elderly people living alone feel it first — they have no one to send out looking for piecework, and what they grow themselves rarely lasts the full season.
Under the Food Scheme Program, the foundation works with community leaders and local church contacts to identify these households, then delivers food directly to them rather than asking them to travel to a collection point. For someone who struggles to walk to the borehole, a distribution two hours away may as well not exist.
Each visit is also a check-in. Teams sit with the household, pray where it is welcome, and note anything that needs following up — a health concern, a grandchild who has stopped going to school, a roof that will not survive the rains.
